The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) is responsible
for approving and monitoring the safety of breast implants in the United
States. Despite outside studies and FDA studies that have linked breast
implants to like anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL), implants remain
on the FDA safe list.
ALCL is a form of cancer found in the fibrous scar tissue that forms around
a breast implant. Symptoms of ALCL can include pain, lumps, swelling,
collection of fluid, hardening of the breast area, masses surrounding
the breast area, or asymmetry in and around the implants. Occurrence of
ALCL isn’t common enough for the FDA to ban all breast implants,
but “acceptable risk” and “safe” take on a new
